Let's Make Comic Book Stores Amazing
We’re writing a newsletter and providing materials to help build better comic book stores.
What does that actually mean?
First off, I don’t have all the answers. I make mistakes. I learn as we grow. I have enthusiasm and passion for the direct market (the fancy name for comic book stores). And I’ve got skin in the game.
Neighborhood Comics opened in March 2019 in Savannah GA. We’re on a sleepy block between a craft beer bar and a coffee shop. I opened the shop with two friends and the goal to make one outstanding comic book store.
So, what is an outstanding comic book store?
For our purposes, an outstanding comic book store focuses on cultivating new comic readers and serving existing comic enthusiasts. For our store, that means carrying a wide range of new stock - both single issues and graphic novels/collections. We also carefully curate back issues (not just keys). We support artists and writers. But perhaps most importantly, we help connect non-traditional comic readers to stories that make a difference in their lives.
How will a newsletter about comic shops help anyone?
The newsletter’s purpose is to share our enthusiasm and creativity with other shop owners, comic collectors and readers and professionals. We want to be another set of eyes and ears in comic retail to expose what we do with a wider audience. We want to celebrate what’s working and brainstorm how to fix what’s broken. At the end of the day it’s about community - just like our physical storefront.
So, what do you say, neighbor? Let’s talk comics.
